In the Harvard Business Review (HBR) article “Stop Reading Lists of Things Successful People Do,” Emre Soyer and Robin M. Hogarth argue that such lists “may be not only useless but also potentially harmful.”
As an entrepreneur, it’s always interesting to benchmark what some “successful” people have done. But as the article states, such evidence of success can be merely anecdotal, may not transfer to different contexts, obscures failures with similar traits, and ignores that success is something personal.
Stories from the past make success sound much more predictable than it actually is: “It’s easy to define a situation as a success or a blunder once it has happened. One can analyze these episodes in hindsight, with laser-sharp precision.”
Also not to forget: every business is different… because their owners are different.
